Former UCSC Student Murdered in Horrific 'Random Act of Violence'


In a murder that has shocked all who’ve heard the details, 30-year-old Carrie Jean Melvin was killed in Hollywood Sunday night in a crime described by police as a ‘random act of violence.‘


Melvin was walking with her boyfriend near her home, heading out for a bite to eat, when a man walked up behind her and blasted her in the head with a shotgun. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Victor Solano-Guzman was taken into custody after 3 a.m., when police were called to his Stevenson College dorm room.


"It was an argument that stemmed into a physical altercation that led to the suspect stabbing the victim," Oweis said.


The victim, whose age and sex the university police Chief Nader Oweis declined to specify, was taken to Dominican Hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries and released.


Solano-Guzman is being held at the Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $375,000 bail on felonies of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. The university has taken no academic-related actions against Solano-Guzman.

This is for those who knew and loved Nina Leibman--for her parents, Joan and Mike, and her sisters, Abby and Marjorie--but it is especially for her children, Philip and Laura, who need to know as they grow up without her that she loved them like the world.


Nina, 38, was killed nine days ago in her home, within earshot of her children. It was not, in all likelihood, a quick death. Nor was it a painless one. Authorities say she was stabbed 14 times--in her neck, her back, her chest.


Her husband of more than a decade, Kenneth Donney, 49, has been charged with her murder.


In September, Nina had filed for divorce from Donney, a former public interest lawyer and former federal prosecutor who worked as an administrator at Santa Clara University's law school. She was killed in the study of their Santa Cruz home, one day before Donney was supposed to have moved out, a sister said. She had slept in the study while awaiting his move.

A 24-year-old USC engineering graduate student from China was found dead in his apartment after he was beaten while walking home from a study group early Thursday, police said.


LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said the student, identified by USC officials as electrical engineering student Xinran Ji, was attacked about 12:45 a.m. out on the street along 29th Street, near Orchard Avenue.


"The victim was somehow able to get back to his residence, where he was discovered this morning," Neiman said.


A trail of blood was visible leading up the street and into the City Park Apartments in the 1200 block of 30th Street, where the young man lived. "It’s safe to assume it’s the student’s (blood trail)," Neiman said.


Ji was pronounced dead at the scene.


"It’s believed a blunt force object was used. It’s not known what that object was," Neiman said.


The motive in the attack was unknown. It was not clear if anything of Ji’s had been stolen.

A university in Qingdao, Shandong province, has replaced some of its cleaning staff with students, it was reported by local media on Sunday.


Since the new semester began in September, students at Qingdao University of Technology have been tasked with cleaning the school twice a week in groups of four or six, according to Qingdao Television.


Their performance is being graded, the report said, and whichever of the university's eight colleges receives the highest grade is awarded 10,000 yuan ($1,440) each month.

Xiao Tianlin, a senior official at the university, said the practice started in June and was aimed at cultivating an awareness of self-discipline and service among students.


A member of college staff who declined to be identified confirmed the report to China Daily on Monday, saying that most students hated the practice, especially with final exams approaching. [ The staff member added ], "Some youngsters are spoiled by parents and are far from professional cleaners."

You're a sober person! :)  i just read today that through the Salvation Army here they have opened up some places that the xx,x,xxxxxxx can go and sleep safely and securely.  Have you heard about that?


( In the context of what has been done to me in (SC) this is an insult.)



Dear xxxxxxx,


I know you are trying to help. We had this conversation before. I well not be housed in a half way house, a sober living environment, a place were homeless people live, have lived or well live in the future.


I am not jaded, spoiled, or snobby, I am a victim of Organized Crime in your town who would like nothing better than to see an intelligent, sensitive, spiritual man like me living with dirty, ignorant, con artist fools and around there rotten foolish energy who are just tools of the devil. ( I know there are a few exceptions to this stereotype but even some of them are fakes over the long run)


This is something that most members of the religious community do not understand. They are fooled by wolves in sheeps clothing in this town all the time.


( Coming from the security industry it disgusts me to see honest Christians and Jews fooled and used as fools by all of these people described here. It disgusts me to see honest Christians and Jews, bribed, blackmailed, sexually compromised, and cow down to the corruption in this town.)


These people are highly toxic, the programs set up for them are highly dehumanizing, and in many cases run by wolves in sheep's clothing, people who are associated with the long time criminal locals in this town.


I've lived in SC 18 years. I know the " social services people, the programs they operate and who there friends and supporters are. In many cases its all the same rotten people in this town who ruined my opportunities and my life and ran me out of time to put me in this position to put " the smart jew from OC that came from a well known family in his place in (SC)."


I know the  real estate market and who owns the real estate in this town. A lot of them are ex drug dealers, pot farmers, pornographers, and sex industry whammer/scammers social engineers. They won't help me and their friends won't help me, most of them would also like to see me end up in a half way house. This just increase s their power in (SC).


What I need is the one in a million person who is spiritual enough, cares enough, is trusting enough, and can afford to let me stay in a clean and quite, studio or room were I can sleep, write, exercise on the beach, ( I need to start with short walks on soft sand on the beach), and stretching,) shower, and rebuild my legs and health and move on with my life.


All this requires a job in the future, and since I am this out spoken about the rotten people who control this town the chances of finding that are minimal.


If I could find a job and a place to live back in xxxxxxxxx or xxxxxxxxxxxxx I'd leave Santa Cruz tomorrow even though I'd rather live here. Thats not going to happen unless I cure my legs first. My legs are not going to get cured in a sober living enviorment, a half way house, a program or a homeless shelter.


None of this has to do with xxxx and you, you have spent too much money on me already.


However, every time I get a motel room, get cleaned, treat my legs, lay down, get a little excercise in they improve. When I go back out onnthe street they get worse again.


I very much wanted to test them on the exercise equipment at the motel but because of all the maintenance work and repair work and having no clothes to get sweaty in did not have the time or opportunity to do that. Had I ridden an excercize bike or used a stair climber even for a few days that would of given me a better reading of exactly how bad of shape they are in and how long it well take to rehabilitate them.


Fyi before this was done to me I use to stair step for an hour, exercise back for a half hour to cool down then jump rope for 5000 repetitions, then do martial arts. On top of mountain biking, surfing and trail running in between.  I was training to surf thirty foot waves at Maverick's.


The drug dealer, jew and Christian hating surfers in (SC) didn't want that to happen so they could steal my intellectual property instead. They would like nothing better than to see me end up living in a Salvation Army program. Thats how the devil gains power in (SC).

Thats why this was done to me to ruin all of that. It is deeply sadistic and satanic. A half way house is not for me.
