When I read it I could not believe how closely it discibed what happened to me in XXXXXXXX - forcing me to sell my house, when I lived with Steve Posthuma while I went to UCSB and then when I moved to Santa Cruz.

One of its main tasks of the Stassi was spying on the population, mainly through a vast network of citizens turned informants, and fighting any opposition by overt and covert measures, including hidden psychological destruction.

Stasi used a method which was really diabolic. It was called Zersetzung, The word is accurately translated to mean "biodegradation".The goal was to destroy secretly the self-confidence of people, for example by damaging their reputation, by organizing failures in their work, and by destroying their personal relationships. The Stasi didn't need to arrest every dissident. It preferred to paralyze them, and it could do so because it had easy access and technology to do so.

By the 1970''s Stasi had decided that the methods of overt persecution such as arrest and torture, were too crude and obvious. It realised that psychological harassment (Steve Posthuma, Paul and Dan Savasky ect.) was far less likely to be recognised for what it was, so its victims, and their supporters, were less likely to prove the crimes committed against them and provoked into active resistance, given that they would often not be aware of the source of their problems, or even its exact nature.

Zersetzung was designed to side-track and "switch off" perceived enemies ( Jews ) so that they would lose the will to live and continue any meaningful life activities. The Stasi intentionally concealed their role as mastermind of the operations. Author Jürgen Fuchs was a victim of Zersetzung and wrote about his experience, describing the Stasi's actions as "psychosocial crime", and "an assault on the human soul"

The Stasi used Zersetzung .... a means of psychological oppression and persecution. Operational psychology as a method applied to victims and opponents to undermine their self-confidence and self-esteem....designed to intimidate and destabilise them by subjecting them to repeated disappointment...... to socially alienate them by interfering with and disrupting their relationships with others as in social undermining....... to induce personal crises in victims, (Mexicans sabotaging my anti-lock brakes at Sears and almost killing me in a car accident that was not my fault, stealing my German shepherds from my vet) leaving them too unnerved and psychologically distressed to have the time and energy for their life.

Full-time officers were posted to all major industrial plants (the extensiveness of any surveillance largely depended on how valuable a product was to the economy) and one tenant in every apartment building was designated as a watchdog reporting to an area representative.

Tiny holes were drilled in apartment and hotel room walls through which Stasi agents filmed citizens with special video cameras. Schools, universities, and hospitals were extensively infiltrated.

Moreover, methods of Zersetzung included espionage, overt, hidden, and feigned; opening letters and listening to telephone calls; encroachments on private property; manipulation of vehicles; and even poisoning food and using false medications.

It should perhaps be noted further that Stassi had a monopoly on monitoring, faking, spying using electronic communications, that soon became available everywhere else.Constant alluding to topics referenced in tapped phone conversations was enough to cause victims and family members to believe they losing their minds, and mental breakdowns and suicide would result. Certain collaborators assisted Stasi in causing the suicides of victims of Zersetzung.

Other collaborators included branches of regional government, university and professional management, housing administrative bodies, banks, and hospitol administrators, physicians and staff, the entertainment industry, social organisations; sport; and education and health services - effectively covering all aspects of civic life, of professionals and students, and sports clubs, organizations.

A large number of Stasi informants were tram conductors, janitors, doctors, nurses and teachers; Stassi believed that the best informants were those whose jobs entailed frequent contact with the public.....the Stasi had one informer per 6.5 people.

Between 1991 and 2011, around 2.75 million individuals, mostly GDR citizens, requested to see their own files relating to being victims of Zersetzung.

One great advantage of the harassment perpetrated under Zersetzung was that its subtle nature meant that it was able to be plausibly denied. This was important

To threaten or intimidate or cause psychoses the Stasi assured itself of access to the target's living quarters and left visible traces of its presence, by adding, removing, and modifying objects. The Stassivp used a systematic degradation of reputation, image, and prestige in a database on one part true, verifiable and degrading, and on the other part false, plausible, irrefutable, and always degrading; a systematic organization of social and professional failures for demolishing the self-confidence of the individual; [...] stimulation of doubts with respect to perspectives on the future; stimulation of mistrust or mutual suspicion among groups [...]; putting in place spatial and temporal obstacles rendering impossible or at least difficult the reciprocal relations of a group or family.
